Volcano Horseman Retreat – project proposal by JMR for YAC
Our team— Juan Ramírez , Maria Uporova and myself, Robert Mikaielian—are thrilled to rank among the winners of the architectural competition Volcano Horseman Retreat by YAC - Young Architects Competition

The Fissure
Location: Hrossaborg, Northeast Iceland
Overview:
Set within Hrossaborg’s dramatic 500-meter-diameter crater, The Fissure integrates 1,600 sqm of architectural interventions that seamlessly marry form and function with the crater’s volatile beauty. This project transforms the caldera’s boundary and interior through innovative CLT modules architecture that both respects and highlights the natural volcanic environment.

Concept Inspiration:
The name The Fissure is inspired by the site’s unique lighting concept and façade treatments, which mimic the natural formation of fissures during volcanic activity. Strategic lighting along key pathways emulates flowing lava, while the use of charred black wood and corten steel for window detailing enhances the volcanic theme. These elements give the structures a distinct appearance reminiscent of lava flows. This thematic integration ties the project to its geological roots and reinforces the concept of nature’s powerful transformative forces.

Architectural Concept:
• The Wall Volume
• Stable
• Independent Living Units
